Paul Varnsverry was elected as councillor for West Hunsbury four years ago and was quickly elevated to the Liberal Democrat run cabinet on Northampton Borough Council.
But he was one of a host of Lib Dems ousted when the Tories took charge of the council at last week's elections.
Mr Varnsverry lost out in Delepre & Briar Hill, a ward he had been forced to contest after boundary changes meant he could no longer sit in West Hunsbury. Conservative Brian Oldham was elected to the one remaining seat in the area.
Speaking on his work in West Hunsbury, Mr Varnsverry said: "It has been a privilege to serve the residents of West Hunsbury.
"While higher profile actions, such as motivating the reformation of the Friends of Hunsbury Hill Country Park and my work as chairman of the neighbourhood management board and partnership, inevitably attract recognition, the individual items of casework have been equally, if not more rewarding.
"I am confident there are a number of residents of West Hunsbury who can vouch for my tenacity and for getting things done."
The former general election candidate has also said he will be continuing to attend council meetings - free of the 'constraints of the councillors code of conduct.'
Writing on his Blog, Mr Varnsverry said: 'The past four years have been a tremendous experience. From newly-elected backbencher to Deputy Leader of the largest non-unitary local authority in the country – and the opportunity to run for Parliament in 2010...
'Northampton Borough Council is a far better organisation today than when the Liberal Democrats took over ‘the World’s Worst Council’ in May 2007. More of the improvements we have made will filter through during the coming weeks and months – such is the ‘lag’ between decisions being made and implemented. I’ll be keeping a close eye on the new Tory administration to ensure they stay truthful and honest and don’t try to claim credit for the Liberal Democrats’ work.'
He added: 'I’ll be returning to the Guildhall to speak as a member of the public; free of the constraints of the councillors’ code of conduct.'
