Sunday, May 1 saw the 2011 Maxxis British ACU Motocross championship reach the halfway stage as the championship made its debut visit to the re-developed and highly praised Milton Park, south of Northampton organised by ACU Events Ltd.
The circuit had been heavily watered in the lead up to the event to allow time to soak into the surface and combat the dust ahead of the hot and sunny day conditions. As the day got underway the action was red hot with the short circuit producing lots of excitement in all three qualifying sessions. The MX2 session had been dominated by the Bike it Cosworth duo of Zach Osborne and Arnaud Tonus when returning to action Neville Bradshaw popped up and posted the fastest lap and went top in Superpole for Pole Position.
The MX1 class saw more drama with Tom Church dropped down to sixth place after Superpole and it was Brad Anderson that improved by three whole seconds on his previous time to take pole position.
The MXY2 class saw point’s leader Jordan Divall take the Pole Position ahead of James Dunn and Ryan Houghton.
Following the lunch break it was time for the racing to begin and in an exciting fashion it did, the short, technical track made the start all important.
The first race started with Osborne and Elliott Banks-Browne making the break on the field early on and battling for the lead until Osborne was able to break away. Arnaud Tonus was pushing hard to recover from a poor start and with four laps remaining was able to catch and pass Banks-Browne for second, while Banks-Browne held on for third place.
The second race of the day saw Zach Osborne suffer a first corner crash, this made for an exciting race as the Series leader battled hard to take the race win. Early race leader Banks-Browne crashed while leading and went on to finish in 5th place. Osborne dominating performance gave him the race win ahead of Tonus and Mel Pocock.
The final MX2 race of the day saw a great battle between the two Bike It Cosworth riders with Osborne holding the early race lead, but it was Tonus who was on a mission and ran away with the race win by over fourteen seconds, third place went to Elliott Banks-Browne.
It was to be Osborne that took the overall and continues to lead the championship ahead of Tonus in second place overall and Banks-Browne in third.
The MX1 class saw three fantastic races during the day with Brad Anderson taking the overall victory. The opening race of the day saw Kristian Whatley make a fantastic start and was running well at the front of the field, until he was hunted down by Anderson who made the pass for the lead on the final lap for the win. Third place position went to Martin Barr who was pushing Whatley for the lead early on.
The second race of day saw Whatley take an early race lead and push on for a comfortable race win over Anderson and Jason Dougan in third place.
The final MX1 of the day produced drama from the start with Whatley being taken down on the first corner and starting from dead last.
At the front it was Anderson that took over the early race lead from Alex Snow and Jason Dougan. Whatley was making good progress through the field to finish in fourth place to secure second overall on the day. Anderson took the win and the overall ahead of Jason Dougan and Martin Barr, Barr third place finish would secure him third overall on the day.
The MXY2 championship produced yet more close and exciting racing at the front. The opening race of the day saw Ryan Houghton take the race win ahead of an exciting battle between Jordan Divall and James Dunn as they changed places a number of times before Divall finally took second place.
The second race of the day it was to be James Dunn that took the race victory after breaking away from Ryan Houghton who would go on to finish in second place ahead of Divall. The championship still sees Divall leading the championship by two points over Houghton.
The Maxxis British Championship now takes a seven week break before the next round at Desertmartin on the June 26, for more information go to www.mxgb.co.uk.
