The results of further forensic tests on the skeletal remains are not expected for several days, if not weeks, but officers are hopeful these will establish how the man came to die.
Currently the cause of death is 'unexplained'. Enquiries are continuing to identify the man, described as aged 20-30, of slight build and between 5ft 6ins and 5ft 8ins tall.
Investigators are also looking through the national missing person's register for clues as to his identity, while members of the public in the Rothersthorpe and Gayton area, at the Junction 15A Northampton Services on the M1 and along the Blisworth Arm by the canal are being questioned.
Detective Superintendent Glyn Timmins, who is leading the investigation, said: "The identification of this man is our clear priority.
"This is the current focus of the investigation and we are exploring forensic opportunities to that end.
"We are continuing to speak to people living locally to see whether there have been any sightings of individuals in the area surrounding the field where the remains were found, also to see if there have been any potential suspicious incidents reported."
