St George and the Scouts

The town centre will be filled with activity, adventure and dancing as Scouts and Morris Dancers take over the Market Square and surrounding streets on St George's Day.
The English Patron Saint's Day takes place on Saturday, April 23 and throughout the day Scouts from across Northampton will be demonstrating their skills and showing what continues to make scouting great.
As well as displays of traditional scouting activities the Scouts will be showing people the exciting side of scouting in the 21st Century.
There will be lots of free activities for children and young people to do and get involved in, such as rock climbing and learning circus skills.
There will also be information available for young people who want to join the Scouts and grown ups who feel they could volunteer some time to help the Scouting movement in Northampton grow.
At 12.30pm the Scouts will assemble at All Saints piazza before marching to Becket's Park to perform their traditional St George's Day renewal of their promise to the movement.
Lee Jones, Northampton District Scouts Commissioner said: "St George's Day is a special date for the Scouts, and I am delighted we can be in the town centre so everyone can join our celebrations.
"Scouting continues to be hugely popular, and a lot of our Scouts have been working hard in preparation for the event.
"We need to attract more adults who can get involved, so I hope we can show just how rewarding it can be to volunteer to help the Scouting movement continue to grow."
The town centre will also be home to a troupe of Morris Dancers representing the Rose and Castle Morris. The troupe will be performing traditional dances as they spend the day wending their way through the streets, dancing for the public at some of the local hostelries.

From 11am the troupe will be in the following locations:
  • Eastgate (Abington Street) 11am
  • The Wig and Pen (St Giles Street) 12.30pm - 2pm
  • All Saints Piazza 2.30pm
  • The King Billy 3.30pm
  • The Malt Shovel 4.30pm
  • The Boat (Stoke Bruerne) 7.30pm
