The existing camera opposite Sentinel Road |
The sign, which warns drivers if they are exceeded the road's 30 mile per hour speed limit, will be erected near Hunsbury Close.
It will face in the opposite direction to the existing sign - constructed towards the end of last year - which stands opposite Sentinel Road.
The electronic cameras were approved by the Highways Agency following a test run last year which saw average speeds fall from 43mph to less than 40mph after a temporary sign was installed. Representatives from the Highways Agency will meet with local campaigner and Conservative prospective borough councillor for West Hunsbury Brian Oldham on Tuesday morning to carry out a site survey to determine the new signs exact position.
Mr Oldham is also in talks with the Agency to install two further electronic speed cameras in Lady Bridge Drive, as well as constructing a zebra crossing on that road.
He said: "Hunsbury Hill Road has a 30mph speed limit, but we can't have speed discs because it is street lit.
"It has signs at each end of the road, but there are people driving along it with enormous irresponsibility.
"The aim of the electronic cameras is to slow people down. Some people are oblivious to them, there are no speed cameras, but it does act as a warning sign.
"We hope they will make people feel a little bit safer. It is amazing that no-one has been wiped out on that bend at Sentinel Road.
"With so many bends Hunsbury Hill is a dangerous road."
An experiment last year saw a police data box pick up an average speed of 43mph along the road over a four week period.
When a temporary electronic sign was installed that figure dropped to under 40mph.
"That proved it does have an effect," said Mr Oldham.
"That is why the Highways Agency are having two on the road."
The move comes despite the fact that no-one has been killed or seriously injured on the road.
Mr Oldham added: "I always believe that prevention is better than cure.
"We don't want a fatality on the road or a young child getting run over."
The electronic camera signs will be paid for out of section 106 development money - cash given under Government rules by developers to an area where they have worked. It must be spent on infrastructure in that area.
