Police will be celebrating something a bit 'special' this weekend.
Tomorrow and Sunday make up National Specials Weekend, aimed at promoting the profile of the special constabulary and demonstrating its value to the community.
The theme this year is the important role Specials play in tackling anti-social behaviour and developing lasting relations with the private and public-sector to fight crime.
Association of Chief Police Officers lead for the Special Constabulary, Chief Constable Peter Fahy, said: "The special constabulary has a long history of providing assistance to police forces across the country and continues to make a tangible contribution to keeping the public safe.
"All of us in society have a duty to come to the aid of others but special constables regularly volunteer themselves to keep people safe.
"Working in the special constabulary provides volunteers with a unique set of experiences and I would encourage anyone wishes to make a difference in their community to consider applying to become a special constable."
And a spokesman for Northamptonshire Police spokesperson added: "Specials have the full powers of a police constable, including the power of arrest, which distinguishes them from other members of the extended police family such as Police Community Support Officers.
"It is a role that will never fundamentally change. We are always on the look out for more special constables and we would welcome any individual who wants to come and join our ranks."
