MILTON MALSOR: 'Community pub' among best in county

A pub in Milton Malsor has been named as one of the best community pubs in the county.
The Compass Inn has been shortlisted for the Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards 'Community Pub of the Year - Rural award.'
The Food & Drink Awards, devised by Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership (NEP), launched for the third year running in February, aim to recognise all that is great about the county’s produce, drink and dining venues.
The Community Pub category was introduced last year to give a public pat on the back to those pubs that go that extra mile to support their communities. The Compass Inn has been shortlisted alongside The George at Tiffield, The Saracen’s Head in Little Brington and The Sun Inn in Hardingstone.
The final four were chosen by a judging panel consisting of Sally Hanrahan from the Northamptonshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England, Ian James of sponsors British Pepper and Spice, Peter Clarke, the assistant editor of the Northampton Chronicle and Echo and the chief executive of the Northamptonshire Community Foundation, Victoria Miles.
Victoria said: "I’m really impressed by the number and standard of entries this year which seems to reflect a return to the values of localness and the importance of the pub within its community.
"Pubs were once at the heart of local life and it’s wonderful to see so many of them do such a great deal to reclaim that position."
The judging session was held, appropriately, at the reigning champions, The Lamplighter in Northampton.
Landlord Paul Hanna said: "Holding this award has been a real boost to all of us here at The Lamplighter and it's meant a great deal to be recognised for our many efforts in supporting the community.
"It really highlights the great value community pubs can provide in terms of bringing people together. It will be hard giving up the title, but I wish all the finalists the very best of luck and hope that everyone will vote for their favourites so that the best pubs win."
People can vote by visiting www.letyourselfgrow.com/foodanddrinkawards, completing a voting form available from each of the venues ot by texting COMPUB followed by the name of your favourite and by your name and your email address to 07786 200690; for example COMPUB Red Lion Fred Bloggs fred.bloggs@foodmail.com
The winner will be decided by public vote only. People have until August 8 to register their vote.
The result will be announced at an awards dinner at Holdenby House on September 1.
