New website for silver surfers

A new website is being set up to support and inform the older generation across the county.
Northamptonshire's 50+ network is launching the site, http://www.northantsfiftyplus.co.uk/, which aims to provide the over 50s with access to up to date information about events, forums and activities.
This website is funded by Northamptonshire County Council’s School of Life project which helps older and young people to share their experiences and skills with each other.
In 2009, Northamptonshire was chosen as just one of only 12 counties to receive £400,000 government funding to run the scheme.
The site will showcase Northamptonshire’s opportunities for older people and provide them with a platform to comment through the introduction of their own blog.
There will also be a facility to book events and pages of information about consultations and issues affecting older people living in Northamptonshire.
Cabinet member for health and adult social services, Councillor Robin Brown said: "This is a big step forward for Northamptonshire’s 50+ Network and its members.
"The new website can support older people throughout the county by encouraging them to use the internet with their own purpose build website.
"A launch is also taking place so people can ask questions and experiment with the site to make sure they know how to use it as it will be a central hub of information."
The launch event, which will take place on Monday, February 28 at Weston Favell Library, will teach people how to surf the web and use email.
Every member registering their email address at http://www.northantsfiftyplus.co.uk/ can enter a web competition prize draw to win £50 of shopping vouchers.
The event begins at 10.30 a.m. with an introduction from the Network Chairman, Roger Rumsey and guest speaker Councillor David Mackintosh.
People can register their attendance by calling 01604 236805 or emailing roger.rumsey@ntlworld.com by Tuesday (February 22).
