Best Village Competition returns

Syresham won last
year's contest
Do you live in the best village in Northamptonshire?
Residents from all around the county are being encouraged to enter this year's Best Village Competition.
Previously called the Village of the Year, the competition is now underway with entry forms having been sent out at the end of January.
The event, run by volunteers based at Northamptonshire ACRE in Hunsbury Hill, is based on two criteria: 'why would you want to live in this village?' and 'why would you want to visit the village?' These two criteria combined are intended to ask the question of what are the 'wow factors' of the community.
The competition not only looks at the community aspects of the village, but also considers how the community cares for its village and looks after its appearance.
It looks at all aspects of village life: its facilities and social activities, businesses, sustainability and provision for the younger and more senior residents.
The overall contest was won by Syresham last year, a medium sized village. The large village winner was Middleton Cheney, while the small village category was won by Harlestone.
The Newcomers Cup, for villages which hadn't previously entered the revised competition, was won by Collyweston.
The closing date for entries to the contest, which is sponsored by Hollowell & Sons Funeral Plans, is the end of March, with winners set to be announced at an Awards Evening on July 19.
County organiser Robert Herring said: "We were very pleased to see an increase in the number of villages entering the competition last year and look forward to a further increase in 2011 especially from those villages who have not entered before."
