Students faces the 'Dragons'

A student from East Hunsbury was among the contestants in a real life Dragons' Den competition. The 'Zero Carbon' challenge, featuring unique, eco-friendly inventions and concepts, took part at Northampton College in Booth Lane on Tuesday, November 16.
Electro Technical student Nikki Owens was part of a team which came up with an idea to convert recycled lawn mowers into boat engines for third world countries.
The 21-year-old said: "We’ve had a lot of fun but it’s been quite competitive too.
"We’ve had to be creative and sales driven and we are really pleased with the idea we developed as we think it covers the brief."
The contest was part of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2010 and saw 60 wannabe entrepreneurs split into groups and asked to come up with an environmentally-focused business idea.
They had chance to meet with experts throughout the day for advisory sessions on how to improve their thinking and planning and, just like the popular TV programme, the final challenge was to convince a daunting panel of ‘Dragons’ that their design was the most marketable.
The initiative involved students from Northampton College and Stamford College and was funded by East Midlands Development Agency.
Curriculum manager in Engineering at Northampton College Stephen Hillyard said: "It was such an exciting day and I’ve been so impressed with how well the students have handled the challenge.
"They have been able to bounce ideas off professionals in order to come up with a sound business strategy.
"When they were first thrown together in groups I could see they were daunted by what lay ahead. By the end of the day they were buzzing. It’s been fantastic to see and be part of."
