Police launch Christmas drink crackdown

A new police operation to reduce the impact of alcohol fuelled disorder has been launched across the county.
Northamptonshire Police unveiled Operation Nightsafe, part of National Alcohol Awareness Week, yesterday (Monday, October 18).
The scheme aims to clampdown on drink related crime and disorder in the run up to Christmas.
It will concentrate not only on trouble in the county's pubs and clubs, but on violence or disturbances in the home caused by too much alcohol.
Headed up by Chief Inspector Dave Lawson, the scheme will also concentrate on incidents involving knives and sexual violence.
He said: "Police take a strong stance against those who spoil the evening for others.
"We have reinvigorated the use of powers which allow officers to remove and ban a person from a specified area for a period of time."
Throughout alcohol awareness week there will also be a crackdown on youngsters congregating in groups and drinking alcohol.
Ch Insp Lawson added: "The subsequent damage and intimidation suffered by people when youths congregate with alcohol will not be tolerated."
